INCREASE IN HARRASSMENT, INTIMIDATION AND THREATS AGAINST THE ALVARO OBREGON INDIGENOUS COMMUNITY, JUCHITAN, OAXACA, BY MAREÑA RENOVABLES AND THE MUNICIPAL PRESIDENT ELECT SAUL VICENTE VAZQUEZ

Yesterday, 14 November 2013, at approximately 12:00pm, a group of men arrived on a bus. When they were intercepted by the community police, the men said they were technicians and that they had the authorisation of the mayor elect of Juchitán, Saúl Vicente Vásquez, and of the Zapata Communal Lands (Ejido) Commissioner to carry out plans for the road to Santa María del Mar: Faced with this act of provocation, comrades from the community police and of the Elders’ Council told them that by decision of the general Assembly on 7 February 2013 there would be no type of work carried out, and that the companies and the different levels of government were obliged to respect this sovereign decision of the Binnizá people of Álvaro Obregon.

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION

The indigenous Binnizá and Ikojts people of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec have been resisting the subjugation of the wind energy multinationals and the Mexican government against our territory. We have carried out diverse legal and mobilisation actions and in this context we are protected by a legal recourse brought against the company Mareña Renovables (MR). Nevertheless, this protection was revoked by the collegiate tribunal of Oaxaca, at the request of Genaro Garcia, the Commissioner of San Dionisio del Mar, who is an employee of the aforementioned company.

This recent incursion of these technicians, as well as a call for tenders made by C. Ricardo Martínez, a municipal agent of the PRI party, to transporters and concessionaires who transport stones and land to flatten roads, causes us to be on MAXIMUM ALERT, against the new attempt by MR and the government to violate our peoples’ sovereign decision to say NO to the wind farm renewable energy project, the effects of which mean pillage, eviction from our land and poverty for our people.

MAREÑA RENOVABLES, UNDERSTAND THAT OUR WIND IS NOT FOR SALE!!!

WIND ENERGY MULTINATIONALS OUT OF THE ISTHMUS OF TEHUANTEPEC!!!
