Colony of Álvaro Obregón, Juchitán, Oaxaca, 4 March 2014.
COMMUNIQUÉ 04 MARCH 2014
ÁLVARO OBREGÓN WILL CONTINUE WITH THE DEFENSE AND SELF-DETERMINATION OF ITS TERRITORY, IN THE FACE OF ANYONE WHO THREATENS THEM.
Yesterday 3 March in the evening, we met in a General Assembly of the Community of Álvaro Obregón, more than 800 women and men of this community to express ourselves regarding the events that took place on 2 March, and then to inform our fellow citizens, compañeros, indigenous peoples and all those who have been in solidarity with our just and worthy struggle:
FIRST: Here in the community, we all know the facts about that day even though the members of the COCEI, PRI, and Alliance parties might say the opposite. Now they claim to be the victims, when we were the ones they attacked, because we defended ourselves. We were peacefully conducting our General Assembly and guarding our community building when WE WERE ATTACKED with bullets, rocks, and sticks by a group of PEOPLE LED BY JORGE ALONSO, ANDRÉS CHARIS, and people from the poor neighborhoods that they brought in from Juchitán.
SECOND: As we agreed in our general assembly on 10 August and 8 December, our General Assembly of citizens “DOES NOT RECOGNIZE ANY OTHER AUTHORITY BESIDES THE ONE NAMED ON 8 DECEMBER 2013,” a decision which we communicated immediately and formally to the competent authorities. THEREFORE we ratify our Community Council, named on 8 December. Likewise we ratify the decision to continue building our community autonomy, responding with greater resolve to the aggressions that the political parties, including the PRI as well as the alliance of PAN, PRD, PT, and MC in which the COCEI members are also grouped, who are now SPEARHEADING the campaign to criminalize us, using lies, persecution, death threats and the criminalization of our community struggle.
THIRD: We decide to continue building and strengthening our indigenous legal system, which includes community justice, in which we always consider everyone to be brothers and sisters, and in which the goal is reeducation as the path to eliminate crime.
FOURTH: The Community Assembly is our highest authority, our Council of Elders is an institution of guidance and representation, the Community Council is made up of our representatives, to whom the Assembly has delegated the task of serving as leaders of our community. Our Community Police are responsible for protecting our community as well as our territory.
We know that these decisions turn us into enemies of all the political parties, of the COCEI members, of the corporations and the three levels of government, because what we want to build here is a life that is different from what the parties had gotten us used to. We have thrown them out of our territory and they will not return, they have only used us for their political and personal objectives. Now we are decided to follow our own path, to recover our community institutions, control our lands, and not allow others, including multinational enterprises such as Mareña Renovables, to come into our town and take it over.
Now the indigenous Binnizá people of Álvaro Obregón are organized and we will defend ourselves with all our force and resources. The barricades that we have installed will be maintained as a defense against the aggressions and threats, and today we remain on maximum alert.
