On May 7, 8 and 9, 2024, within the program of the 46th anniversary of the assassination of Peppino Impastato, we will organize a series of activities and conversation with the aim to share and discuss experiences between the historical struggle against the Mafia in Sicily and the forms of violence derived from the transnational criminal economy, narco-states and the imposition of megaprojects in different geographies of the Global South. We want to connect the resistance of communities, organizations and movements that denounce and fight these paramilitary powers, and promote the construction of a global movement, where other worlds are possible.
The idea of this Forum was born from the work shared during the last two years between Casa Memoria and Sicilia Sud Globale. It was consolidated during the Zapatista 30th anniversary celebrations, which took place in December 2023 in Mexico at the Caracol Dolores Hidalgo. On that occasion we discussed the participation of the Global South network in the march of May 9 and the Forum of May 8 on the theme of mafia and organized crime. We started acknowledging the important connections between the history of Peppino Impastato, in particular his commitment to the defense of the territory, against organized crime and the construction of global movements, being reflected and lived in many territorial struggles in Mexico.
For this reason, we invited a small delegation composed of representatives of struggles that share a historic tradition of resistance as indigenous peoples and peasants in the Southern Pacific region of Mexico such as Michoacán, Guerrero, Oaxaca and Chiapas; that currently survive and confront organized crime in collusion with the Mexican narco-state. We see the importance of connecting realities that face the different heads of the capitalist hydra, to raise the voice for those who are subjected under the yoke of violence and that would cost them their lives; if they interconnect the world for dispossession and war, we must interconnect our worlds for resistance, remembering those who have given their lives to defend life itself.
Some of them already knew the reality of Cinisi and the struggle of Peppino Impastato, having visited the Casa Memoria in recent years, knowing the Global South Sicilia delegation and having seen a video message from Giovanni Impastato, delivered and reproduced directly in Mexico.
We believe it is very important to develop spaces for discussion and dialogue, in order to then organize forms of agreement on a regional, national and global scale. Let’s start with local interaction between alternatives, to define a multidisciplinary path on a very topical issue also in our territory, where many young people risk their lives due to addictions, in particular to crack.
On May 8, some members of the Antimafia Association for the fight against drugs will be present at Cinisi, that have at the forefront of the struggle associations such as the La Casa di Giulio. These organizations are carrying out a very important commitment in Sicily on the issue of addictions.
Opening a dialogue that goes beyond our borders with those who are fighting the same phenomenon in Mexico can give greater strength and breadth to what is an urgent battle that can only be fought on a global level.
We ask for your support to carry out this initiative, which will have per diem costs for participants coming from Mexico. We want to give visibility to an issue that represents a serious emergency, but which is often not talked about as much as it should be. Your support will help us to say together: No to mafia and drug trafficking!

El 7, 8 y 9 de mayo de 2024, dentro del programa del 46º aniversario del asesinato de Peppino Impastato, organizaremos una serie de actividades y conversación con el objetivo es compartir y conversar experiencias entre la lucha histórica contra la Mafia en Sicilia y las formas de violencia derivada de la economía criminal transnacional, los narcoestados y la imposición de megaproyectos en diferentes geografías del Sur Global, Queremos conectar las resistencias de las comunidades, organizaciones y movimientos que denuncian y combaten a estos poderes paramilitares, e impulsar la construcción un movimiento global, donde otros mundos posibles.
La idea de este Foro nació del trabajo compartido durante los últimos dos años entre Casa Memoria y Sicilia Sud Globale. Se consolidó durante las celebraciones del 30 aniversario zapatista, que tuvieron lugar en diciembre de 2023 en México en el Caracol Dolores Hidalgo. En esa oportunidad se discutió la participación de la red Sur Global en la marcha del 9 de mayo y el Foro del 8 de mayo sobre el tema mafia y crimen organizado. Partimos de las importantes conexiones entre la historia de Peppino Impastato, en particular su compromiso con la defensa del territorio, contra el crimen organizado y la construcción de movimientos globales, que se refleja y vive en muchas luchas territoriales de México.
Por está razón, invitamos a una pequeña delegación integrada por representantes de luchas que comparten una histórica tradición de resistencia como pueblos indígenas y campesinos en la región Sur del Pacifico Mexicano como es Michoacán, Guerrero, Oaxaca y Chiapas, y que, actualmente sobreviven y enfrentan al crimen organizado en contubernio con el narcoestado mexicano. Vemos la importancia de conectar realidades que se enfrentan a las diferentes cabezas de la hidra capitalista, para alzar la voz por quiénes están sometidos bajo el yugo de la violencia y eso les costaría la vida, si ellos interconectan el mundo para el despojo y la guerra, nosotros debemos interconectar nuestros mundos para la resistencia, recordando a quiénes han dado la vida, por defender la vida misma.
Algunos de ellos ya conocieron la realidad de Cinisi y la lucha de Peppino Impastato, visitando Casa Memoria en los últimos años y a través de la delegación Global South Sicilia y un mensaje en video de Giovanni Impastato, entregado y reproducido directamente en México.
Creemos que es muy importante desarrollar espacios de discusión y diálogo, para luego organizar formas de acuerdo a escala regional, nacional y global. Empecemos por la interacción local entre alternativas, para definir un camino multidisciplinario sobre un tema de gran actualidad también en nuestro territorio, donde muchos jóvenes arriesgan su vida debido a las adicciones, en particular al crack.
El 8 de mayo, algunos miembros de la Asociación Antimafia para la lucha contra las drogas estarán presentes en Cinisi, que tiene en primera línea a asociaciones como La Casa di Giulio. Estas organizaciones están llevando a cabo un compromiso muy importante en Sicilia en materia de adicciones. Abrir un diálogo que vaya más allá de nuestras fronteras con quienes luchan contra el mismo fenómeno en México puede dar mayor fuerza y amplitud a lo que es una batalla urgente que sólo puede librarse a nivel global.
Les solicitamos apoyo para llevar a cabo esta iniciativa, la cual tendrá costos por viáticos para los participantes provenientes de México. Queremos dar visibilidad a un tema que representa una grave emergencia, pero del que muchas veces no se habla todo lo necesario. Su apoyo nos ayudará a decir juntos No a la mafia y al narcotráfico.
